Restaurant City Tips and Tricks

Yes yes, I know, Restaurant City again. I’d usually leave posts like this to gaming sites but I received quite a good number of inquiries about Restaurant City so I figured I’ll devote a post to it. Plus, I feel like I owe people who arrived here looking for RC info something with more meat. For regular readers though, don’t worry, this will be my last RC related post. So, if you’re here purely for the food posts, this is your cue to bail.

Restaurant City

What is Restaurant City?
It’s a game application developed by Playfish on Facebook.

How do you get ingredients?
You get ingredients 3 ways. The first is the daily freebie. This is automatic and will greet you as soon as you log on each day. The next is the daily quiz. Each day, you receive a quiz question in your inbox. If you answer the food quiz correctly, you get a free ingredient. The last way is when you visit a friend’s restaurant FOR THE FIRST TIME. Ever. No, it’s not a daily thing like in Pet Society; it’s a forever thing.

How do you get GP faster?
Keep your browser on! Minimize, switch to another window, your call. What’s important is, your restaurant window is running so you can gain GP. While you can gain money even if you’re offline, GP can only be gained when your window is on so if you’re going for the level-ups, keep that window open.

GP?
GP means gourmet points. That’s the little status bar on top of your screen that lets you know when you’ll level up next.

Quick Coins
Get quick coins by picking up trash and shaking trees. Trees? While you’re in restaurant view, scroll around your lot. Click all the trees you see because they sometimes drop coins.

Wheee! Recipes galore!
Even if you’re tempted to level up lots of recipes at once, restrain yourself. Your restaurant can only serve one dish from each category (appetizer, main course & dessert) at a time. So, choose one recipe, click to make sure it’s the recipe being served, and level that up. The higher the level of the recipe being served, the higher GP you get so stick to one. Unfortunately, a recipe’s level has no effect on money gains.

Restaurant City

Cook to Waiter to Table Ratios?
There’s no hard and fast rule to ratios, but personally, I go with 3 tables per cook, then 1-2 waiters per 3 cooks. I always prioritize more cooks over waiters and it can work as long as you fix your table layout so that your waiter doesn’t have to walk far to serve your tables. Remember that waiters can serve tables diagonally so as long as the square they’re standing in has contact with the table, you’re set.

Keeping your Employees Happy
Monitor your employees happiness. Try to keep it big happy smile green (by feeding or resting) as much as you can because happier employees mean better productivity. Which simply translates to them moving faster.

Restaurant City

Rest or Feed?
So, should you rest your employees when you’re offline? It’s still debatable but personally, I think it’s best to pump them up to full, then let them work. When you return, you’re assured of earnings up to a max of 2000. Even at the current maximum employee number of 8, you’ll spend at most 1600 feeding them sandwiches so you still make a profit of 400. Plus, it’s kinder to your restaurant reputation than closing your shop.

I can close my shop??Yes you can. Simply bar the door with something like a chair, table or your mailbox. Or you can just remove the door itself.

What’s up with my friends’ intricate mazes?
See some of your Facebook friends make their customers walk through intricate mazes before getting to their tables? Some people like doing mazes because it gives their wait staff more time to clear tables! Unlike in real life, here, customers don’t complain even if you make them walk to the far ends of the room just to get to their table. Of course, that also means it’ll take time before your guests can get seated so it means a slower customer turnover. It really is best to test your layouts to figure out what works best for you.

How do you stop the addiction?
Now that, unfortunately, is a question I can’t answer. *facepalm*

    thanks for the tips! they helped me loads! lol

    how did you assign you waitresses to two different sets of tables?

    • kaoko says:

      Trial and error. Once you set it up and see that the waitress isn’t inside the hole, fix it by switching some of your stoves around. Then check again. Just keep on trading your ovens with different islands until you get the ideal waitress assignment — then never ever move it again, bwahahahaha! (just kidding. if it gets messed up because you redo your layout, just switch oven assignments again :D )

  3. Ehlizze Cinco says:

    Gud am, I just would like to know if I can put doors in the comfort rooms, if yes, how can I do this, thank u.

  4. Ralph Ople says:

    I was browsing some comments and i have some thoughts to share for starters (lvl 1-10.) Dont use a typical restaurant lay-out of scattered tables it will be more efficient to form an enclosed (tables surrounding the cook and the waiters) area wherein the cook and the waiters are in the middle. it will be a more efficient lay-out cause less time to walk and deliver foods.

  5. Ralph Ople says:

    oops forgot..
    PS.. on saving issue….
    if you always play a faster way of saving is by clicking redecorate then move anything (like a chair) then bring it back. then click check and it will be saved. I think all will be saved including the Gourmet points and the gold– safer way to save… thanks that’s all for now :)

  6. baux says:

    hi.. this is a very nice guide but i do have one question.. there’s this new thing in RC “visit gourmet street” and it’s full of high rated restos.. and I saw 2-3 restos with weird shapes. the walls are made of windows and they can make out any shape they want? how can I do day? been trying to figure it out for a loooong time!! :o

    • Ralph Ople says:

      Most of the restaurant in the Gourmet Street have used hacks and cheats. like the all mirrors street design. the tons of speakers and radio inside the restaurant. they have used hacks (gold hacks some are glitches). Because of the updates they say some of the cheats now doesn’t work.

  7. kaoko says:

    @Ehlizze Cinco
    I haven’t tried lately but last time I tried, I couldn’t. I tried using walls but the doors just wouldn’t attach :(

    @Ralph Ople
    Thanks for the ideas.

    @baux
    I’m sorry but I don’t think I can answer your question since I haven’t seen the restaurants you’ve described. Perhaps they changed the storefront shape?

  8. kristy says:

    if your toilet is dirty it comes up with a symbol if you dont have a cleaner or just want to save time you can open the redecorate box put the toilet in there and then put it back in your restaurant and its all good again

    • Kage says:

      can i just say that u people are stupid!!!!! all you have to do to clean ur toilet is to click on it with your mouse. its called doing it manually!!!!!!!!! there is no eaiser way to do it. it only takes one click of a mouse!!!

  9. Kiks says:

    thanks for them sweet beans of advice.

    running this “business” has been a tough nut to crack. growing basil or making placards is much easier!

    good my street does not have thugs, triads or anyone who would throw acid into a mob of onlookers or feeders.

    I know how to earn money without lose the rating (thumbs up). Just close the restaurant but leave your employees there, save the game, return in like an hour, 2 or 3. When you open the game you will have like $2000 in recent earnings and the rating will stay.

  13. elijah says:

    hi kao, i just observed lately that those customers who play with the “arcades” don’t really eat at my restaurant. as soon as they’re done playing, they just go out of my resto..lol.

    do you like the current music selections (irish heart, classic, etc.)? i hope we can have more options (like rock music, dance tune, etc.)

    • khoo says:

      hi! elijah, put a chair in your arcade machine and your customer will go the the next available table.

    • khoo says:

      hi! elijah, I found out just now that the chair is just like a normal waiting chair. They will ask for a table and if not available will give the thumb down sign. But, if there are 2 machines and one without a chair, the customer will go to the chair first and if no table available she will go to the machine to play and then leave without giving the sign. Therefore, the chair is just to buy time and is not necessarily needed by the machine.

    Hi! I was wondering why I don’t have 5-star sign above my restaurant? I was looking at my friends’ resto and most of them have stars on them ( like the 5-star and 3 or 4 are lit) even my friends who are lower in level than me. Pls help I’ve been trying to figure this out for a very long time! Thanks!

    • Ralph Ople says:

      go to street then visit a random street then join the gourmet club then your resto will be visited by other players and it will be rated…. you will be getting your DREAM STARS haha :)

      • Missie says:

        I’ve been playing for so long and joined the gourmet club but I haven’t been rated by anyone else… :-( how do I know if I’m appearing to random street… :-( my friends who are lower level than me already have there stars but not for me…I think it is unfair… :-(

      • tuazon says:

        ahmm.. its because its RANDOM..

  21. kaoko says:

    @Everyone:
    My apologies, but I’m not as active on Restaurant City anymore, seeing as I’ve gone back to playing Pet Society. If there are any questions from fellow commenters that you’d like to answer, please feel free to do so, as you probably are more up to date about gameplay. Thank you for your help, and let’s keep the ball rolling!

    @Karina
    No I didn’t. I ran into that post some weeks ago too and noticed the similarities. I do know that I wrote my post first (mine first went up April 14, 2009) and I drafted it from scratch. There weren’t many posts on Restaurant City at that time. The similarities are probably coincidental though.
    EDIT: Oh, I reviewed the posts and I think the one which you find similar is the intro to this earlier post, dated May 31? I guess we just had the same flow of thought.

    @Bllu
    Please note that this post was written a week after Restaurant City was launched. A lot of things have changed with gameplay, likewise, this post was designed for newbie players, as we were during that time. I’m sorry if you found it insubstantial since you’re probably a seasoned player, so I guess it’s best for you to try other sites.

  22. cosrad says:

    well now you can serve drinks, and have 3 dishes per catagory… and there is a small ingredient market that only sells 3 ingredients, the ingredients it sells changes every once in a while, another way is to trade with your friends, so there is really 4 ways to get ingredients. 1.Daily free ingredient, 2. Daily Quiz, 3. visiting your friends restaurant for the first time, 4. The ingredient market, 5. trading.

  23. sharp says:

    Hey, Thanks for the help :D

    I just wondered since my customers always leave, can i buy like better chairs and get them to sit better so i can cook the food and give it to them before they leave? :O

    • kaoko says:

      Hi Nick! Last I checked, the chair cost / design doesn’t do much of a diff to a customer’s comfort (unlike say, in The Sims) but they may have changed it now.

  31. Sebastian says:

    i think there r 6 ways to get ingrediets

    1- visit other retaurants
    2- the daily freebie
    3- the daily quiz
    4- by buying them ( i think is too expensive)
    5- by changing the ingredients with friends
    6- by planting them :D but is random :(

  32. Darren says:

    I’m not sure when they implemented this feature but to give some incentive to pick up trash at your/a friend’s restaurant, you get a gourmet point for every item you pick up, along with the coins and the amount that goes toward the trash pick-up award.

    @Sebastian
    Right you are! #4 & #6 are new ways though, and #5 isn’t really a way to earn a new ingredient but more a way to get the ingredient you need, since it’s a swap.

  37. Robyn says:

    Just started playing today, and I have a question…

    If I decide to leave my computer for more than 3 hours and all of my people go hungry/need sleep, is there nothing I can do until I get back to my computer to get them working again?

    • kaoko says:

      Unfortunately no. When you get back, most likely, you’ll find them slumped on the floor with messages saying NEED FOOD / REST! And it’s also likely that you’ll find your restaurant’s rating going down but don’t worry, it’s easy to bounce back anyway :D And unlike making them work with the game turned off, you get GP as well as coins.

      • Robyn says:

        Thank you! This guide helped me quite a bit! I was lost when I first started. I JUST re-read the whole thing too, and I guess I skipped over the part where I should move the tables closer to the waiters… that helped a lot! I’m losing less customers because my waiters can do things faster! Thanks!!

    I am newly addicted to this game, and my question is: How do I get my money back after I have tryed a couple of roofs? I end up having only one but I was charged for everyone that I have tryed. Anybody that can help me I would appreciate.

  42. kaoko says:

    @Harrison
    Agree! I know I said I quit playing but surprise! I’m actually back. *headdesk*

    @Gabriela
    Oh, unfortunately, “trying it out” means buying it. :( The best you could do is to sell the roofs you have purchased (you’ll see it under the decorate screen) but it usually translates to just 1/3 of the purchase price :( Don’t worry though, earning money is easy on RC.

  43. Silent says:

    Love the list, just wanted to throw in a system I’ve started using.
    Since I tend to be at my computer for vast periods of time I have no problems keeping an eye on one employee at a time.

    So, currently I have six staff, three cooks, two waiters and one cleaner, I know it seems silly having someone dedicated to cleaning but I only summon my cleaner when the toilets need cleaning, the rest of the time my cleaner is busy resting.
    Why bother with that? Simple, I cycle through the jobs, so A starts as cleaner, b as cook and c is waiter, when b becomes 85% I switch a and b, so b rests and a works, when b reaches 100% I switch b and c, so c rests and b waits tables.

    This way I save money on buying pick-me-ups for the staff and can typically keep things running fast, the only thing is you have to change the numbers for the higher amount of staff.

    So to sumerise, always have one person resting and switch out well before another member of staff gets tired, if you have the time it’ll save hundreds in coin.

    • kaoko says:

      Interesting idea. Especially helpful if you’re trying to save up for the nicer furniture. I was toying with the idea of having a cleaner on rotation too, but it’s so difficult keeping an eye on everyone.

  44. Stella says:

    Can someone please please please answer this!
    One of my employees don’t show up when I put them as a waiter but when I put them as a chef they do but then if you DO put then as a waiter, my employee disappears!!!! Someone help me!

    • kaoko says:

      It’s probably a bug. That has never happened to me. Maybe you can try moving things around in your resto? If it still happens even after you move your stoves around, perhaps you should contact the playfish support staff instead, since it’ll most likely be a bug.
