LaPiS 2: Desserts - Vargas Kitchen Butter Cake

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Lasang Pinoy Sunday Edition button Ah dessert. It’s one thing I’m not too keen on—a travesty, friends would insist. I wasn’t born with a sweet tooth and while I eat cakes and pastries as a snack, I almost never eat it to cap off a meal.

But even if I decline dessert a lot, there are still a few sweet treats I never turn down. Still, a fruitful visit to Salcedo Market gave me something to photograph for Lasang Pinoy – Sundays’ Dessert theme. In the form of a delightfully rich, yet plain looking butter cake.

Spotlight on Grapple. The fruit, not the Judo move.

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Such a fruity confusion, grapples. When my mom brought home this lovely scented fruit, I was all excited. A cross between an apple and a grape? It surely looked like an apple yet smelled so divinely like a grape. What would biting into it be like? Would it be fleshy like a grape? Is it related to the guapple (guava apple hybrid) or the apple-mango (apple and mango hybrid)?

Holiday Highlights

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Ah Christmas vacation. You’d think that with all the eating I’ve been doing, I’d have tons of stuff to write about. But honestly, I’ve been eating so much, I just threw caution to the wind and decided to eat first, take pictures and write later. Well, more like next year. Still, with the flurry of free food flowing into the office, buffets and parties, I figured I’d do a quick rundown of some of the most memorable things I’ve eaten. Forgive me if this entry isn’t very coherent. When you’ve been stuffing your face for two weeks straight, I doubt you’d make much sense either.

Ode to (an)Pan

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. One *bite* *chew chew chew* Actually. I’m finding it hard to create an actual ode. Reminiscing about that first bite into the soft, soft bread is enough to make my brain stop. Ah Anpan. You make my heart stop.

Buko Juice

Friday, December 7th, 2007

The memories of my childhood’s summers are dotted with ice candy, ice scramble and buko juice. Among these favorites though, it’s buko juice that remains to be a staple. And why not? With its light sweetness and refreshing flavor, it’s something to be enjoyed regardless of season.

Ground Chicken in Yakitori Sauce Bento

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By now, a few of you are aware of my attachment to Fancy Fishballs!, a surimi-like product that’s sold in fancy shapes and colors (like flower and unidentified animal), hence the name. Still, nothing prepared me for what I like to call Even Fancier Fishballs!. Purchased from SM Hypermart, these fishballs are available in a variety of colors and flavors, with some of them even having stuffing! Mostly intended for hotpot dishes, these fishballs are flexible enough for a variety of preparations. Perfect for adding a splash of color to stir-fries and soups, I would think. I have to admit though, when we first spotted it, one thing came to mind. BENTO!
